Saint Laurent Le 5 A 7 Bag Review

Saint Laurent Le 5 A 7 Bag Review

I am super excited to be sharing this bag with you! The last designer bag that I purchased was my Louis Vuitton Mini Palm Springs Backpack, back in the Summer of 2020, so it’s been over a year and a half since I got a new bag. I was originally saving up for a Saint Laurent Kate, with the gold tassel, and I do still love that bag a lot, but after having spent 7 weeks away from home with only an affordable shoulder bag (by House of Want) and my Louis Vuitton, I found myself gravitating towards the shoulder bag as it was just so easy to carry and use! I kept seeing the Saint Laurent Le 5 A 7 Bag around on people, and I began to fall head over heels in love with it! So, I started putting my savings towards this bag instead.

Then something amazing happened while I was in the United States, Matches Fashion had sent me a £300 off coupon (they do this a few times a year) to be spent on an order over £1000. The Saint Laurent 5 A 7 was actually sold out on their website though, so I got in touch with their customer service to see if it would be restocked, and low and behold, a return had been made and was going to be put back in stock in two days time! I got really excited by this as there was just one of these bags available, and I had to make sure I got it! I set my alarm for various hours in the morning (as I was on EST timing instead of the UK) and when it came back in stock, I snapped it up immediately! The chase and the excitement of trying to get this bag was crazy, and then it was waiting for me when I returned home a few weeks later, so I at least had something amazing to look forward to. The best part is the price that I got it for though, which I will tell you more about in the review below!

Size/Design Of The Bag

The height of the Saint Laurent 5 A 7 is around 16cm, the width is 23cm, and the depth is around 6.5cm. The strap length is around 49cm, and the drop of it is 20cm. So you can see it’s the perfect size for a shoulder bag! It’s a gorgeous rounded rectangular shape, with a sturdy strap that has a gold buckle so you can adjust the height of it. There are 3 different holes on the strap, so you can only adjust it a little way, but I have mine on the standard middle hole. I think the way that the clasp closes the bag is really cool! It features a leather tab that flips over from the back of the bag, which has the classic YSL gold metal logo, and the end of the L slides into a little leather tab on the front, as you can see in the photos. So it’s easy to hook and unhook! I would be slightly nervous of scratching the leather like this, but hopefully it will be fine! There is a suede-lined interior and a zipped pocket, so you have some extra security inside for your valuables.

The Price Point

The new price of this 5 A 7 Saint Laurent bag is £1410, however when I purchased it a couple of months ago, it was still £1285, before the price increase. That coupled with my £300 off coupon made the bag only £985! So for me, it was absolutely worth it to get it for such a good deal! I also imagine there will be some great Black Friday deals around soon, if you want to snap it up! The price increase is a little steep, but it’s such a cool bag, I do think it’s worth it if you are used to paying these kinds of prices for luxury goods!

The Quality

This Saint Laurent bag is made in Italy, from 100% calf leather. It’s a really nice leather too as it’s super smooth and seems to be sturdy, but I think it could scratch quite easily. I’ve seen the brown version in a few pictures and I already saw marks on it! The brown seems much more delicate than black though, hence why I chose this one. You could perhaps get the Crocodile version as that might scratch up less! It seems pretty well made, even though the Saint Laurent quality in general is not as good as it used to be (my West Harness boots broke after 3 wears!), but this bag looks good.

The Comfort

This is purely for the comfort of wearing the bag, and I think it’s actually a 7/10 in my opinion. The strap itself is quite stiff and sturdy, so it can slip off your shoulder easily since it’s not very flexible to mould to the shoulder, but I’m hoping that loosens up over time and if I’m putting heavier items in there, it should stay. It’s really easy to carry on the crook of your arm or in your hand though, that’s for sure! But slippery knitwear or jackets, and wearing this on the shoulder, isn’t the easiest. Everyone else seems to get along ok with this though, so I don’t know if it’s the shape of my shoulder, or perhaps it eases up over time, but I will update this as I get more wear out of it!

The Versatility

This is the part that made me fall in love with the Saint Laurent 5 A 7 bag! There’s three ways to wear it – on the shoulder, the crook of your arm, or by hand, and each way looks extremely chic. It’s one of those bags that you can actually dress up or down, and it looks just as good either way. The black and gold combination is extremely classic too, so you can’t go wrong with it. I usually tend to pick luxury bags with a cross-body strap as that’s how I like to wear them, hands free, however I think this is probably the most versatile bag that I own in terms of how you can wear it! There’s something about cross-body that always gives a casual element, but this one works from day to night! I love it! It goes with everything!

Overall Opinion

My overall opinion of the Saint Laurent 5 A 7 bag in this review is that it’s a 9/10. It gets super high marks on the design and the versatility, but the shoulder strap isn’t as comfortable as I would like, and I’m worried about the delicate leather. However, everything else seems to outweigh this and we usually pick our bags for the design and versatility, so that’s why I love this one! If you’re wondering if you should buy this bag, I hope my review helped! You can see all of the photos below with two different outfits, and it is truly gorgeous! I definitely recommend it! It’s my favourite bag right now, it’s simply stunning and so classy! I can’t get enough of it! What do you think of my Saint Laurent 5 A 7 bag review? Let me know! Lorna xx.
