Gucci GG Marmont Black Velvet Mini Bag Review
I’m really excited to share with you my brand new bag – the Gucci GG Marmont Black Velvet Mini Bag! I’ve literally been selling so many things from my wardrobe in order to save up for two new bags this year as it’s been 7 months since my last smaller bag purchase (can you believe the last bag I bought was September 2017…) and I’ve been wanting something new. I’ve sold so many clothes and raised enough money to buy this one and am still saving for my second. But first up is my new, extremely beautiful bag, which I cannot wait to wear and show you in outfits! If you’re interested in this bag yourself, check out SSENSE right now as it’s still priced lower and everywhere else now has the price increased version. Don’t miss out, the links are just below! Let me know if you have any questions.
The Design & Details
I’m pretty sure most of you are familiar with the Gucci GG Marmont Velvet Bags in all sizes – they have been the bag of the season for 2017 and this year as well. It’s a classic flap bag style with a really sturdy, press button lock/clasp (similar to the Gucci Dionysus) so it stays securely shut. It’s got chevron velvet with stitching as you can see to create a gorgeous quilted pattern, including a heart on the back. The hardware is antique gold or brass, making the GG logo and the chain much more durable as it’s already got that vintage appearance and you wont be worried about tiny little scratches. The chain also has a leather top half so it’s comfortable on your shoulder. It’s got an internal pocket inside as well as a main compartment, and is made in Italy. It’s very much a classic in terms of the design, as you can see from the photos. Other than the heart on the back, the quilting, the pink lining, and the gold hardware with the big double GG, there’s no other details to the bag. It’s simple, elegant, minimal in a Gucci way, and very easy to wear. I’ve heard small things like lip glosses or pens can slip out of the side when it’s closed, but I’ve not had that issue as I don’t lie my bags flat or upside down. It’s such a chic and iconic design though, once you have seen it, you will see it everywhere – especially online!
As this bag comes in about 4 different sizes, I thought I would provide the measurements for you. I have the Mini size, which is the smallest, and the width is around 22cm, the height is around 13cm and the depth is 6cm. If you would prefer that in inches, that’s a width of 8.6″, a height of 5.1″ and a depth of 2.3″. It’s definitely a mini size as you can see from the modelled photos below. If you would like a reference of my size too, I’m 5ft 4 (longer torso, shorter legs) and a size UK 8-10. My chest measures around 39″, my waist is around 28″, and my hips/butt are around 39″. I always prefer mini sized bags as I find the larger ones overwhelm my frame, and since I have back issues, lighter bags are easier for me to carry without feeling pain. This Gucci GG Marmont Mini is no exception either. The chain is lightweight for its size, so it’s perfect. I definitely recommend this one if you want something for everyday use. It fits a lot inside as well (see this video).
Much like my Gucci GG Marmont Velvet Belt Bag, the velvet on this version is similar. It’s a lot more robust than any of the other designer velvet’s (especially Chanel – that’s beyond delicate) but it does still dent if you leave the chain pressed into it. As the chain does sit across the top of the bag when it’s worn with the longer strap, it can leave some marks, but you can rub/brush them out. I’ve found it doesn’t damage or dent easily and I’m pleased about that. It is a fluff, hair and lint magnet though, but that’s something that all black velvet has in common – it’s unavoidable. You can just use a little roller to get it off or just brush it off, so as long as you don’t mind doing that, it’s a great bag to have because I always find black velvet to look incredibly classy and smart! There’s something about it that just looks luxurious and it feels so nice to rub your fingers across!
The interior is made of a pink satin/silk, and this is the same across all of the velvet GG Marmont bags. It’s even in my Belt Bag and it’s so pretty! It’s a nice contrast from the black. I would also say don’t use it in the rain, but anyone who knows velvet should know that it damages in water.
Now I managed to get this bag on SSENSE as they hadn’t put the price up. Gucci did a price increase a couple of weeks ago and because I was saving up for this one, I almost got stung paying more. Since they put it up by over £100 (that’s they’re third price increase in around a year!) I was extremely reluctant to pay above what I had initially planned, which is when I found it on SSENSE still at the previous price. I had to be quick actually and decided to put it on my credit card as I was very close to almost having enough for it, and I’m glad I did. Everywhere now has the new price, however SSENSE do still have a few left at the original price before the increase, so I recommend clicking the link and buying it from there if you want it so you don’t have to pay more (there’s no customs if you’re international either, they pay it themselves).
For the bag’s design and quality (it’s made in Italy), I would say it’s a fair price for Gucci and designer bags in general. Most have a retail value of over £1500 and most are above £2000, so I’m quite pleased by the lower end price of this one compared to other bags. Especially since Gucci shoes can be close in price to this, as well as their denim sometimes costing more, which never makes sense. So if you’re wondering about a cheaper Gucci bag and if it’s worth it, that depends on your opinion, but I’m glad I have it as I love it and couldn’t be happier!
4 Ways To Wear The Gucci GG Marmont Bag
As you can see from the photos just above and below, there’s 4 different ways you can wear this bag due to the chain. The sliding chain strap can be worn as a shoulder strap with a 55cm drop (this hits around the top of my hips) or it can be worn as a top handle with a 30cm drop by doubling the chain up. I find this to be extremely versatile as you can wear it cross-body for the daytime when you need to be hands free, but come the evening, if you double the chain up and wear it on your shoulder, it looks so glamorous! I feel like it’s one of those bags that you can take from day to night easily just by adjusting the chain. My favourite way is cross-body, but I do find it to be just a bit short, so I really like wearing it on my shoulder too. As it’s black, it literally goes with anything, however I do find I’m limited to gold hardware on my jewellery or clothes to complete the look.
I’m pretty sure that you can tell my overall opinion is a good one. I wouldn’t have saved up and sold my things in order to buy it if I was unsure, so I always make certain a bag is one I want when I buy it. I do have a couple of cons, but they are minor. Because I ordered from SSENSE it didn’t come with the box that Gucci bags usually come in (my Belt Bag came with one) so I don’t have anything other than 2 dust bags to store it in. The other is that velvet can be delicate and a lint magnet as it’s not as robust as suede or leather, so I do need to be extra careful in the rain or not to scratch it – but I am careful with all my bags anyway and have a little handbag raincoat (see here) that I take with me. The positives far outweigh that though, I love the shape, the design, the luxurious look and feel, the 4 ways to wear it making it versatile, the pink lining, the little heart on the back… All of it. It’s gorgeous! I give it 9.5 out of 10! I definitely recommend this bag!
