Styling Mom Jeans & High Waisted Skinnies

Styling Mom Jeans & High Waisted Jeans

When it comes to denim, you all know how much I absolutely love it! Jeans have been my passion since I was about 16 and I’ve collected a vast amount of them over the years, being obsessed with them. As time passed and I got very used to how jeans should fit, and watched the trends come and go, I developed a strong knowing of what cuts I liked the most and what I found to be most comfortable and flattering. Those would be high waisted skinny jeans and more recently, mom jeans. I thought it would be good to share with you some styling tips for both cuts, and how I like to wear them.

High Waisted Jeans

High waisted jeans are actually my favourite entirely, especially if they’re skinny, as I love how flattering they are on my body shape, purely because they suit my figure. One way that I love to wear high waisted skinny jeans is with a cropped sweater and ankle boots, but I also love them with a blouse and high heels. Throwing on an oversized cardigan or leather jacket really ties that together, but the key for me is to have the waist showing of the jeans as it really lengthens your legs. By doing this, you can also wear sneakers this way, as your legs still look long, and that’s an important thing for me as I’m only 5ft 4″ with a 26″ inseam.

High waisted jeans with exposed buttons at the fly have become a huge favourite of mine, just like this pair above, especially if they have a raw hem too. I think that’s a really nice look for the Spring and Summer months. Otherwise, I am obsessed with black skinny jeans with a high waist. I don’t mind if they’re distressed or not, but I don’t think you can ever go wrong with a good fitting pair of black skinny jeans, with the inseam hitting the ankle, and the rise hitting near the belly button. It’s such a flattering look that elongates the legs a lot. These two pairs above showcase that style perfectly.

Mom Jeans

Mom jeans I began to love about a year ago, and got more into them the last few months. Again, it might be because they are high waisted, but also I love the vintage looking washes that go hand in hand with them, and the looser fit can be quite comfortable, especially since they are 100% cotton. The way I like to style mom jeans is with combat boots (as you have seen) and looser fitting sweaters, but I do think they look good dressed up in summer with a cami top and some heeled sandals. I did see an article about 6 ways to style them as well (see here), which included turtlenecks, snakeskin, blazers and button up shirts, so it actually goes to show just how versatile they are. However you choose to wear them, just make sure you select some fitted pieces too to balance it out.

As you can see from the two styles I chose above for mom jeans, I like them with holes and distressing as much as I do plain, but I prefer the distressed ones to fit a little looser and the plain vintage inspired washes to fit a bit more on the snug side. Either way, they need a high rise, and the inseam needs to be cropped so there’s no long length that bunches up at the ankles. A sleek silhouette is important when it comes to styling mom jeans, because if they’re worn too long or too baggy, they can really overwhelm your frame, especially if you’re on the shorter side like me. These two options above are great choices for either of those looks in my opinion, don’t you think?

I’ve also included a little video that I found on YouTube as it showcases how to style mom jeans in different ways, which is ideal if you’re having any blank moments when it comes to outfits, especially if you prefer not to wear combat boots, like I love to. What are your favourite jeans? I would love to know!

You wear your jeans so well! I’ve been enjoying high waisted styles more being a mum, need that mum tum to be contained, haha! but it’s tricky as I have the ab muscle separation post babies and it means that some jeans can really hurt if the button is in the wrong place. So jeans are tricky for me to buy! Luckily I have enough pairs to keep me going for a while, haha!

Hope that you have a lovely weekend ahead of you 🙂

I remember that outfit in the top photo from when I wandered through some of your back catalogue – it’s still one of my all time favourites of your looks. 🙂

I’ve decided, as well as trying to catch up, to jump back in and read your new posts at the same time or it’ll take me forever to get caught up. LOL

My favourite jeans are my Levi 519s of which I have 9 different pairs – not sure which of the 9 I like best though. 🙂

btw, on the topic of choosing jeans, I was wondering if you’d seen this article… https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/two-thirds-men-ask-partners-17801701 It seems incredible to me. LOL Mind you, I don’t have a partner so what would I know? 😀
