Boda Skins Kay Michaels Womens Leather Jacket Review

Boda Skins Kay Michaels Women’s Leather Jacket Review

As you know, I had been wanting a Boda Skins Kay Michaels Leather Jacket for years! I think the very first time I saw them was in 2014 and I had completely fallen in love. That was back when they did an array of colours that were really popular among fashion bloggers. I’ve admired the Black Kay Michaels for years as it’s an absolute classic, but the price tag always meant I didn’t take the plunge and instead ended up getting a few ALLSAINTS leather jackets instead. I’ve still always kept my eye on the brand though and when I saw at Christmas they were having a 10% extra sale on gift cards and a private sale on end of season jackets – I jumped! I bought a gift card which I got 10% extra added on to it, and the price of this Antique Creased Brown version was £337 in the sale. It meant I got it for just under £300 instead of the £449 price tag they retail at. I had secretly loved the Antique Creased Brown for months, especially as Adam owns one, and a tan brown was something that I didn’t own, just a dark brown, and since a lot of my bags and shoes have gold hardware, it just made sense to opt for this one with gold, which complements the tan nicely. Anyway, lets get to my review!

The Kay Michaels Fit

The Kay Michaels is a classic, slim fitting biker style leather jacket and it’s amazing. Boda Skins have the same style for both men and women, as well as tall length options too. The sleeve length is just perfect, the actual jacket length is ideal as it’s not too short (I don’t like short as much) and the cut is really snug and slim all over. They’re jackets are designed to hug your body and fit closely to your skin, and they do just that! It can be slightly loose in the sides when it’s undone and create a square shape (see photos below), but I’m sure it will settle down. It’s actually one of the only leather jackets I can zip all the way up! Usually my jackets never fit me zipped up because of my chest, not unless they’re loose in the shoulders anyway, but this is snug and zips up perfectly! It’s amazing! That actually shocked me, but ended up being ideal as I wore it on the weekend and it was cold!

The Sizing

I was very unsure on what size to choose in Boda Skins as they don’t stock any jackets in stores so I couldn’t try one on, and I’d never tried the brand before. I decided to play it safe and choose my usual UK 8 size and hope for the best. When it came, I was surprised that it fitted. It’s really tight (which is how leather jackets need to be to start with as they stretch), but not in a way that looks strained. I can wear it with a long sleeve t-shirt underneath or a normal t-shirt and it’s fine, but I wouldn’t be able to fit knitwear under it as it would be too tight. My general size in ALLSAINTS leather jackets for a comparison is a UK 4 or 6, as they tend to run bigger. I’m a size UK 6 in the classic Balfern jacket, so I would say size up one size from that and your Boda Skins Kay Michaels should fit similarly to that. I think if I got the black one, I would opt for a size UK 10 though so I can wear knitwear underneath.

The Leather & Colour

It’s made from a 100% Napa Sheepskin so the leather is incredibly soft and supple, to the point that it feels really smooth. You can move around in it without feeling restricted as it stretches with you. Boda Skins do make their leather jackets in many colours, but as I’ve chosen the Antique Creased Brown here, it’s what I’m familiar with. It feels like a shiny brown, but almost matte. It features creasing and little marks on it like it would be vintage or as the name states – antique. It’s a gorgeous mid brown, with warm tones, so it’s very much like tan, but not as yellow. It reminds me of an older leather sofa or something similar. I’ve not edited the colour of my photos so if you’re viewing it on a Macbook Pro, it should be fairly accurate, but all computer screens vary. It’s a colour I am incredibly pleased with though and am so happy to have!

The Jacket Details

Now the details on the Boda Skins Kay Michaels are what set it apart from other leather jackets in my opinion and makes it really easy to review! There are 2 outside pockets which have zips, and then 2 inside pockets (also zipped) and one is an iPhone pocket. This is amazing as you literally fit your iPhone in it securely and zip it up. It’s the perfect size for my iPhone 6. It has a premium satin lining which is really comfortable on your skin, tailored lapels, hand polished and personalised hardware with the B logo on, custom zipper pulls (leather tabs) which are designed to last a life time, hand woven labels inside, and it comes in three different hardware colours – platinum, gold, or gunmetal. I went with gold as you can see. There’s quilted padding on the arms and diamond shape stitching on the back, there’s little leather tabs on top of the shoulders (epaulettes) and rivets all over to add to the appeal of a biker jacket. Even the zipper at the front has 2 zipper runners, so you can close it tighter or looser, depending on how you want it to fit.

My Overall Opinion

I’m pretty sure you can tell that my overall opinion in this review is positive! I’m seriously impressed by the attention to detail, all the little things they have added and applied to the jacket to make it user friendly, fitted, and personal. I love the customisations you can have too as they had free engraving on at the time so I have a little gunmetal plaque that hangs off the back embossed with LORNA on it (see bottom photo) and it even came in a Boda Skins fabric dust bag! Now that’s quality. I LOVE the fit of it and how snug it is, it’s pretty flattering and I think it will be even more so when it settles into my body and doesn’t hang so straight when undone. The gold hardware is lovely and the Antique Creased Brown leather is gorgeous. I can’t fault it! Overall I would give it a 9.75 out of 10! I’m definitely trying to save up for a black version now! You will be seeing the full outfit featuring this jacket on the 5th, so stay tuned next week on Monday!

Nice jacket, nicely designed, you are looking gorgeous in it, but £449.00, it is so expensive.

Thank you! Yeah, the retail price is very expensive which is why I am glad I got it for just under £300 instead.

Very nice indeed. 🙂 It suits you really well so I’m pleased for you that you were able to get such a decent discount to obtain it. On my laptop screen the colour is showing as a kind of very light milk chocolate kind of brown… which is really nice. I can understand your sofa comparison too though. 🙂

I must also just say that I adore your cute robin earrings in these photos. 😀 They’re so cheery looking.

Cool jacket, Lorna… yes indeed! Nice colour and details.
I also like th white t-shirt, but I think it would suit the outfit better if it were tucked in the jeans.

I did try to find the iPhone in your pockets but to no avail. I guess I must have been looking at the wrong pockets 😉
I did notice you managed to fit something round in the left one.

    Tee-hee…!

You wouldn’t see the iPhone in the pocket as it’s an inside pocket in the jacket, so it’s hidden. Doesn’t show through the jacket. And the round thing in the jeans pocket is the lens cap for the camera lol 🙂

The detailing on that jacket is positively supernatural. So the simple, unadorned T-shirt is perfect for underneath. As always, well done.

Hi Lorna love the jacket!!..how tall are you and weight. How long is the sleeve from shoulder?..I’m 5 feet 2ninches and am concerned the sleeve will be too long on me! Please share!!!

Hi, I don’t know what the length is as I haven’t measured it and can’t at the moment, but I’m 5ft 4 and I wear a general size 8 in most things. Weight I find tricky because I have a large butt and a bigger bust, which adds weight on, so measurements are probably more accurate. I have a 39″ bust, a 27″ waist, and 39″ hips. Hope that helps! Sleeve length also depends on the size you buy, what size are you looking at?

I’m looking at size 8 so I was wondering how you compare the sleeve lenght between boda vs all saints

Hi, it depends on which Allsaints, but I find the Boda sleeves to be longer for sure. If you message their customer service they will be able to tell you the size 8 sleeve measurement and probably give you a discount code! Hope that helps!
