Swiss Clinic Derma Roller 2mm – My Experience

Swiss Clinic Skin Renewal Roller + Serum Review

I don’t often cover beauty products, but when I do, it’s always ones that I am using and completely in love with. Since I blogged about using Liz Earle as my skincare routine, I still do everyday, but I’ve added in something new within the last 3 months that I can’t get enough of – Derma Rolling.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, in short, it’s a technique of rolling a Skin Roller across your face in numerous directions so that the tiny needles pierce the skin – causing it to renew itself. This may sound scary and daunting and leave you wondering why on earth you would want to do that, along with numerous questions like ‘does it hurt?’ or ‘how does it work?’ so let me get to it!

What Does It Do?

This Swiss Clinic Skin Roller has 540 micro-needles made of surgical steel on its roller. The idea behind this is after a few minutes of use, going back and forth over the skin on your face, the needles open up thousands of tiny micro-channels in the skin allowing the skin to absorb up to 300% more of your chosen skin care product, as well as causing it to renew and repair itself quicker by prompting collagen creation and stimulating new skin cells – contributing to smoother, healthier skin. It’s almost like you’re speeding up the renewal process!

The Skin Roller can be used to treat a number of different skin conditions as well. I’ve personally been using it for my acne scarring, but it also works as anti-aging as well since it contributes to skin rejuvenation and increased circulation, among other things. I’ve noticed that it’s really handy at treating acne itself, I don’t know if that’s because it’s releasing the heat under the skin and stopping the sebum from blocking the pores, but it has made a huge improvement on my skin.

What Length Should I Choose?

Choosing the right needle length on your Skin Roller depends on how sensitive your skin is, but most importantly, which part of the body you intend to treat and for what purpose. We all know that our skin on the face and neck is extremely sensitive, much more so than the skin on areas of our body, so for my face, I chose the 0.2mm length (which is the shortest) because I’m younger. My mum actually opted for the 0.5mm as a longer length is ideal for more mature skin and wrinkles, as it goes deeper into the layers. I’ve personally found the 0.2mm just perfect for me and my mum loves the 0.5mm, so that was a great choice between us both!

What Is The Rejuvenating Serum?

The particular set that I have (Skin Renewal) comes with the Skin Roller and the Rejuvenating Serum, so it’s only right that I share this with you too since it’s part of the regime. This particular serum contains large amounts of active ingredients, meaning that up to 300% more of these are absorbed after rolling than when the serum is applied without the roller. The active ingredients are able to penetrate deeply into the skin, strengthening the skin’s healing process and encouraging the formation of new, healthy skin. Its aim is to reduce scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and soften skin as it stimulates blood circulation, improves elasticity and reduces enlarged pores. It leaves your skin with a more even tone, which also makes it more resilient, and preserves its vitality and energy by slowing down the ageing process.

It contains Beta-Glucan and studies show that it can stimulate the cells of the immune system and increase immune system activity and efficacy in the fight against pathogens that attack the human body – meaning it stimulates your body to naturally renew the skin. Studies have also shown that the Rejuvenating Serum improves the healing of minor skin damage, promotes the rapid and effective healing of burns, smooths dry and cracked skin and gets rid of eczema and fungus. How cool is that? It’s a fantastic serum to use straight after derma rolling. So let me tell you how I use it.

How Do You Use The Skin Renewal Kit?

It’s incredibly easy and pretty painless! It’s something that I’ve managed to adopt into my nightly routine and find it fun as well because I see the results instantly. Here’s how I do it:

  • I use my Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, then my Instant Boost Skin Tonic to prep my skin.
  • I then roll the Skin Roller back and forth over my skin for a few minutes in different directions.
  • I spend about 5 minutes in total going over the different sections in short strokes.
  • When I’m done, I immediately apply the Rejuvenating Serum all over so it can penetrate my skin.

And that’s it… I then make sure I clean my roller with the sanitizing spray you can buy from them too. This is really quick and easy, plus it has a pH value similar to that of the skin. It also contains both Aloe Vera and Vitamin E and has a fresh, lemony scent, so it’s ideal to just spritz it onto the roller as you need to clean it after every use to stop the spread of bacteria.

If you do want to apply a night cream, let the Rejuvenating Serum absorb for at least one hour before applying. I have found though that even after an hour, some moisturisers can sting a bit if you apply them after skin rolling as your skin can be sensitive, so you might want to stick with the serum for the first week and try creams at your own pace.

One thing you don’t want to do though is rush it. You want to make sure you have about 10 minutes to commit to your bedtime routine here as it’s important to get it right. You want to roll the Skin Roller back and forth with straight and firm strokes to achieve optimal results. The pressure you apply is up to you and how much you can handle, but be sure to roll in multiple directions: vertically, horizontally and diagonally both back and forth for 2-3 minutes (avoid the soft under eye area though).

How Often Do I Use It?

When you first start, do it for 5-7 days in a row. So you want to make sure you use it for a week, then you take a break for the same amount of time you used it for. So if you used it for 7 days, you have a break for 7 days after, then you start again for 7 days. It’s easy to do a week on and a week off. Just make sure you are letting your skin rest and not using it every single day as it needs time to heal. It’s also recommended that you keep using the Rejuvenating Serum on the days you’re not skin rolling as well, just do you get the maximum benefits.

Is It Painful?

The simple answer is not really. There are certain areas on your face that can be a bit uncomfortable and those for me are on my forehead as it’s quite bony, and on my cheek bones. Anywhere that’s just skin on bone rather than more of a plump skin can be a bit sore, but I apply less pressure there. You might think it would hurt as it’s needles, but it doesn’t. I’m actually severely phobic of needles, but you can’t even see these. They’re like little raised bumps on a roller and don’t feel sharp. It just feels like pressure on your skin, so it’s definitely not painful, just a little uncomfortable at times.

What To Expect

I wanted to write this section as I didn’t know what to expect when I first tried it. One thing you will get almost immediately is pink skin. As the little tiny needles penetrate the skin, it causes it to go pale red as the blood circulation comes to the surface (Emily shows it here). I’m sure many of you know this reaction if you exfoliate or rub your skin too much, it goes pink. Mine lasts about 20 minutes and then goes down. I did do it too hard once though and it was still a bit pink in the morning, so make sure you get the pressure right for you. It should go down within half an hour.

What Was Your Experience Like?

Honestly, I love it! I’ve suffered with acne since I was 14 (hormonal and food allergy related) and because I was born with a genetic disorder, my skin doesn’t heal properly and takes about 5 times longer than a regular person so my face is full of red marks (I use make-up to cover that, which is why you don’t see them in my photos). From the very first day that I started using the Swiss Clinic Skin Renewal system, I noticed a huge improvement. Obviously my scars were not gone, but the next morning I could see clearer and fresher skin between the red marks and after the week, it was looking really plump and healthy, which is something it lacks usually.

It’s been 3 months since I’ve been using it and honestly, lots of my little red marks have now almost gone and my skin is so much clearer. I’m still breaking out due to hormones and other internal issues, but when I use it I do notice the acne is a lot calmer and much more in control. I really don’t know how it does it, but I can only assume the little holes let out the bacteria or sebum in some way, so the pores are not clogging up and I do get less actual spots/pimples when I use it. So for me, it’s definitely a fantastic regime to add in and I quite enjoy it as I see the results almost immediately, which is what I love in a product. I’m quite impatient!

I wasn’t paid to do this review, but Swiss Clinic were kind enough to let me try the kit, so I’m under no obligation to say anything positive if I didn’t get on with it, but I genuinely do and I find it fantastic (as does my mum and she’s using it for fine lines and general renewal). I would honestly post photos of my skin before and after I use it, but because thousands of you read my blog on a daily basis, I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m not confident enough to show it in all it’s scarred and acne glory because I’ve been criticized numerous times before for it. It’s not something I can change or fix because it’s health related, so I’d rather not go through the negativity again, but if at some point I am confident enough and it’s healed up enough, I will share!

In the meantime though, if you’re looking to renew your skin, remove red marks, help fine lines etc and speed up the process, I can definitely recommend this to you! I can’t get enough of it and can physically see the changes it makes to my skin, so I can’t be without it now! Have any of you tried it or do you do derma rolling? I would love to know!

OK, I have to confess, the not really painful was very good to know 🙂 The Swiss Clinic Derma Roller seems to be good and I would like to test the Rejuvenating Serum with Beta-Glucan. I have very sensitive skin, so I really don’t know whether the roller would be good for me, but the serum, for sure – I would love to try it! You definitely should go on with your beauty reviews, I love them! Hope you have a nice day!

Yeah, if you can manage it being slightly uncomfortable, it’s worth it! You can always apply less pressure as well xx.

This was a fascinating read, Lorna. I started reading this entry thinking “why on earth would anyone put themselves through such an ordeal?” (this might be a typical male response?) but you’ve argued very clearly the benefits that you’ve achieved from this so I’ve reached the end of the article feeling that I’ve learned something… and I hope you continue to reap the benefits from this treatment. 🙂

Ha ha, you thought the same as me at first when I first saw it. I thought it would be painful and a crazy thing to do, but once I understood it, I realised it was actually amazing 😀

Hi Lorna! Thank you for a very considered review and for sharing your experience with this skin care system. I’m glad to hear it’s worked so well for you and lead to a visible improvement in the skin. I wanted to know whether there was any discomfort or pain, and I’m relieved to hear it’s not painful for you and you find the minor discomfort worth it for the end result. I haven’t tried anything like this before because of concerns that it might be too harsh. So it was really helpful to read your review.

I was sorry to read that you’ve received negative comments in the past due to your skin complaints. It’s a real shame and shouldn’t be the case. It’s brave of you to write honestly about your experiences, and it’s appreciated.

    Lots of love Saba xx

Yeah, definitely not overly painful, just uncomfortable, so it’s tolerable. Just go lightly on any bone areas like the forehead and jaw line etc, and you can put more pressure on the cheeks.

It is a shame that people are very quick to judge and criticize others for things they can’t change or help, things that don’t define us, so I never understand where such negativity comes from to be honest, but that’s life it seems!

I think it’s supposed to help fine lines, I’m not sure about deep wrinkles though.

Hi, I would assume you just put your shipping address and check if they ship to the USA. They might not due to different laws with beauty products.
