I Wish I Could Fly, Way Up To The Sky

But I can’t. You can! I can’t…

Some of you might get that reference (if you are older and were a fan of Keith Harris and Orvil), but others might wonder what on earth I’m on about, ha ha. I basically wish I was brave enough, and healthy enough, to go on a plane and fly to lots of places. New York and Los Angeles are two of the highest on my list, but I know I have mentioned somewhere a little more closer to home to you before, and that’s: Greece.

Ever since I watched the movie ‘Shirley Valentine’ when I was little (and have watched it about 50 times since), I have wanted to visit Greece. The ‘Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants’ later confirmed that for me when Lena met Kostos there and fell in love. There’s so many beautiful places in Greece, but one of my all time favourites to go to would have to be Mykonos. The white buildings, the bright blue sky and sea… It’s like a paradise. It’s my all time dream to go there and I don’t think it’s something that I could do via the train and boat due to my sea sickness, so I’m really going to have to get over the flying issue… but, I’m petrified.

Adam and I often talk about travelling and seeing all these different countries, but the actual concept of getting on a plane and flying there, being suspended in the air by nothing, and being stuck inside the small cabin up in the air, is one that neither of us can wrap our heads around. I know flying is statistically more safe than driving and crashes are rare, but I just can’t do it. Some of our friends often just jet off to somewhere like Turkey, Spain, Belgium etc. at the last minute and it’s always for an amazing price, especially considering the prices that Adam and I have to pay to holiday in the UK – like in St. Ives!

Have any of you ever been to Mykonos? I’d love to see your photos and hear about your experience there. And have any of you managed to get over a major fear of flying in order to see countries you otherwise couldn’t? I know Mykonos is nicknamed ‘The Island Of The Winds’ and it actually only has just over 10,000 people living there, so it really does sound incredible. I’m not sure why I feel so drawn to it, other than the fact it looks simply stunning, but Greece in general is a country that I have always felt such a strong connection to. I half wonder if I was Greek in a past life!

But, please do tell me all about Mykonos, or your trips to Greece. I know some of you live there too, so is Mykonos all it’s made out to be?

I understand your fear of flight. Being in such tight confines and placing your life in another’s hands is scary. As you said, statistically it’s much safer up there than in a car. Maybe one day you will decide to just do it. ❀️

I hope one day you can overcome your fear of flying. There is so much to see in this world for a young couple like yourselves. Is the flying or your health problems that stop you? Some airlines do run ‘courses’ for people who fear flying.

It’s a mixture between the two, so it’s not a good combination at all, lol!

Lorna, I hope you get passed your fear of flying, I had to when I had to go to Toronto for training for current job… I ended up flying back and forth each weekend so I could see my daughter… it really became second nature. I want to go to Greece too, I have seen so many people’s pictures from their travels there… it looks like such a beautiful place… have a great weekend xox

I do hope that you are able to get over your fear of flying somehow. I suspect that the only way to conquer such a fear is to actually fly somewhere though? I’ve never felt at all unsafe or worried on a plane – though I will concede that it can feel like a somewhat surreal experience. Especially on longer flights such as to the US.

I certainly get the reference in your title – it was actually not too bad a record really. πŸ˜€

I thought you would get the reference! πŸ˜€

The surreal part I can probably handle, but the confined space for long periods of time actually up in the sky… Hmm lol.

    Hello Lorna!

I really do hope you are able to overcome your fear and travel to Greece at some point! There are a lot of great looking islands, both in Aegean and Ionian Sea!

Mykonos and Santorini are 2 of the most beautiful ones, but since they are a point of holidays for thousands of tourists, at some point they lose the traditional feeling of a greek island.. But still, most of them have amazing places and beaches to visit!

When you are ready, here in Greece we are waiting for both you and Adam to have a great time! Either on a island at summer, or up in the mountains at Winter!

It would definitely be in the Summer or a warmer time, not the Winter. I know what you mean about it being too touristy, but I guess it would be nice to feel at home there also if it’s quite English!

Greece is a superb country but maybe a bit too hot. I see that you are like me Lorna…..You are afraid of this idea of being stuck in a plane over the earth for hours…Me too i’m afraid of taking plane.

I know how you fee, believe me, about flying. I have flown so many times, long flights, 14 hours many many times, but I always hate to get on a plane. Always. Even a 45 min flight from Birmingham to Dublin, that I have made around 20 times, scares me. Nevertheless, my wanderlust is stronger than my fear. So I keep on flying quite a lot. I also had the feeling that I was a Greek in the past πŸ™‚ I went to Greece sometimes, but not to Mykonos. You should definitely go! It’s beautiful, history is great, food too, the atmosphere is incredible. You will love it, I am sure! I hope you have a lovely week, dear Lorna, and consider flying to Mykonos soon!

  8. July 5, 2016 / 11:26 am

I haven’t been to Mykonos, however it is one of the places I want to visit, the view is absolutely beautiful! In order to get over your fear, you should start with short flights, maybe to Northern Ireland or Scotland, after that you will see that flying is not scary but so much fun seeing the world from the sky πŸ™‚

I was thinking of doing that, but everyone said the planes to Scotland are tiny and not very good, so it might not be a good experience. To fly to Paris it’s an hour, then if it went awful, I’m sure I could get the Eurostar back? πŸ™‚

This is a lovely idea for a blog post Lorna! I immediately recognised your Orville reference, being a child of the ‘eighties! I understand your concerns about flying and can relate to what you said. For me, it’s the fear of losing my luggage and getting stopped at customs, even for making an honest mistake! I feel so tense when they rifle through my things! Then there’s the fear of being in a small space on a plane for hours, and having no control over what could happen! Sorry I’m probably not helping with your fears at all!

I saw Mykonos courtesy of Keeping up with the Kardashians, and it certainly is a paradise as you’ve said! It would be so lovely to go there and experience it first-hand! I like the idea of you having been Greek in a past life!

Thanks so much for your sweet comments on my blog.

    Lots of love Saba xx

Oh gosh! Yeah, that isn’t helping, ha ha! I’m sorry you feel that way too though, it’s not good is it? How have you managed to overcome it?

      • July 12, 2016 / 5:47 am

Thanks Lorna! Well in the past I just managed to endure it and go on long flights with my family despite my nerves, but I do find airports quite scary. Now I’m older and set in my ways, I haven’t been able to bring myself to go on a flight in recent years. However, the Eurostar would probably be a good option for me, as it’s more like a train! Or I could always follow your recommendation and go to St. Ives, for a more local and less nerve-wracking option! It looks so nice from your blog posts!

        xx

Yes!! You should go to St. Ives!! And The Eurostar is amazing! Trains I’m extremely good on, so the Eurostar is just a very large train, but you can go to many places, so it’s definitely worth it! Expensive, but worth it! And you only go through the luggage scanner and put your metal bits in a box easily, it’s definitely not as strict as the airport xx.

          • July 15, 2016 / 6:08 pm

That’s good to know Lorna! I agree, trains are a much better option! I even enjoy being on the train when it’s quiet, and I have a good magazine to read! I’m glad to hear they don’t go through peoples’ belongings so strictly on the Eurostar, and my jewellery would be safe! I’m hopeful that a mini-break might be possible for me in the future!

Thanks so much for your suggestions. xx

Yeah, nobody went through my bags at all, they just went through the scanner and that’s it, not opened! Only valuables go in the tray and then you put them straight back on. So I think you should be ok! It will be great to go on it xx.

Greece tops my traveling wishlist. So want to go there. Someday! I hope you get over your flight fear soon. My husband is an anxious flyer too. And the best way he makes himself comfortable in flight is by taking an aisle seat, eating a little and snoring off to glory.
