5 Clothing Tips For A Confident You

When it comes to handling certain situations, one thing we need to do is make sure that we look our best and feel our best. We all have our insecurities and areas of our body’s that we don’t like, but I’ve figured out a few ways to enhance our best assets and hide the ones we don’t like so much, in order to create a more powerful and confident feeling from within. I’m sure we all have our go to clothes that we wear for handling different things in our life, and when we get a new pair of shoes or a jacket that we think looks amazing, we instantly feel more confident, but when that new feeling wears off, instead of going out and buying something else, try a few of these staple pieces that will help sort out most of our worries. Being confident with who you are is so important – I hope it helps!

Power Suit

I’ve found that when you’re in an important or business situation and it’s required for you to be professional, wearing a suit which makes you feel confident and strong is key. It’s not called the power suit for nothing! A lot of people in the business field have a suit that they feel most comfortable in, and for us ladies, I think it opens up many more options. For me, it’s my coral two piece above (or this Topshop burgundy suit here). It’s smart enough to act as a skirt suit which can be worn with a shirt and heels, but the bright orange colour of it exudes confidence and happiness, so it shows you’re also cheerful and excited by life. If I saw someone wearing this suit, I would immediately be drawn to it and wonder what they’re personality is like. Certain clothes can make you look and feel confident, and a brightly coloured suit is a fantastic one for work environments.

Beach Cover Up

One of the worst places you can be made to feel insecure is the beach. Everyone is in their bikinis and skimpy clothing because it’s hot, but you might constantly be comparing yourself to all the other women on the beach. Of course I believe that we are all beautiful in our own way and everyone’s body is different from the next, so there’s no right or wrong way to look. When I was at St. Ives I noticed that 99% of the women there had what I would call a normal figure. Cellulite, a little stomach pooch etc, all areas that would be ridiculed and picked on in the media, all because we are supposed to look like a photoshop picture, but the truth is the majority of us do not, and we shouldn’t be made to feel ashamed.

Because of the industry I work in and having my pictures for the world to see online everyday, I am guilty of feeling insecure and I wouldn’t go without shorts or a sarong on the beach to go over my bikini. So if you are like me, and you can’t do a full bikini on the beach because you don’t feel confident about your stomach or your thighs etc, the one thing that gave me confidence was a cover up. You can feel relaxed and free enough to stay cool and enjoy the surroundings, but confident enough because you’re not exposed. Plus, you can get some really pretty styles, so it’s a win, win! If you prefer something more than a sarong, you can even try a looser fitting dress to throw over your swimsuit, like this one, but check out these two options from Xehar Curvy below.

Wrap Waist Details

When it comes to dresses and playsuits, a lot of them can be highly unflattering to our figures, not accentuating the key areas and highlighting our insecurities, so one thing I have learned that’s a universal cut and flattering to just about everyone that wears it is the wrap waist. Think of a wrap waist dress or playsuit and look at how it draws the attention to a slimmer waist. The illusion is created with the diagonal fabric that crosses over and comes to a smaller point at the waist, while the bust and hip area looks wider, creating the perfect hourglass figure. If you want to go one step further, try a belt around the waist too as that will highlight it even more. I know it makes me feel more confident if I have something with a wrap waist as I have a bigger chest and some cuts of dresses can really put me out of proportion. The best part is that the bottom half can be floaty, so there’s no clinging fabric.

Shoulder/Arm Details

If one thing that bothers you is your upper arms because you feel insecure (you might think you have bingo wings) then the current trend of the moment for cold shoulder tops is absolutely ideal! Growing up, I’ve always had bigger upper arms because genetically my family have large biceps (see here), but when your muscles aren’t tensed, you just see mass, which means my arms are larger than I would like. The cold shoulder details are ideal for minimising that because the fabric layer covers the biceps entirely, but your actual shoulder bones are still on display, as you can see above. I swear cold shoulder tops were made for ladies who hate their bingo wings! I know I feel much more confident in tops like this because I don’t have to worry about what other people are thinking of my arms, but you can still see my body shape because there’s no fabric at the top. It couldn’t be more perfect, could it? This style also comes in dress versions, like this one, so you don’t even need to think about putting together a full outfit. Perfect Fitting Jeans

Finally, but definitely not last as this isn’t in order, we have perfect fitting jeans. I know I have many of them, but there’s always that one pair that you go to when you want to feel sexy and confident. When you manage to find that pair of jeans that fits you like a glove, enhances your butt, slims your legs down etc, you can’t help but feel elated inside and wearing them just makes you walk, talk and act more powerful and confident. You can’t beat a great pair of jeans for making you feel this way! In my eyes, there’s nothing better! If you are looking for what to choose for the universally flattering cut, it’s a high waisted, cropped skinny jean. So the rise is tall enough to minimize any muffin top, the leg length hits at the ankles, and the fit is skinny all the way down, enhancing and contouring your legs. You want to choose black or indigo blue, purely because they are slimming and they hide any flaws you don’t want visible. Once you find jeans like this, you will live in them!

Attitude – As a bonus, and not related to clothes, I wanted to talk about attitude. It has everything to do with feeling confident and let me tell you why. You might have your power suit on, you might have found a gorgeous dress, or you might have a great pair of jeans, but if you don’t feel like you look good in it or you don’t feel comfortable, then you won’t be confident. Your attitude is what exudes the confidence. You need to feel it from inside, so you can get the perfect clothes and make sure all your insecurities are covered, which will definitely make you feel confident, but make sure you feel comfortable in your outfit and that you like it, don’t just wear it because someone else said you should. The clothes are about enhancing your mindset so the confidence is at its peak! #AConfidentYou is a better you! I’ve included 2 denim items below which I think are so on trend and confidence boosting too, since you know I love denim!

I have been a bit away from the web due to shifting places, which led me to feeling tired for many days! But here I am again, and hopefully for good 🙂 I agree with you that clothes can make us feel more confident and I like cover-ups at the beach; the coral suit is also amazing for a professional meeting and the sleeves of the top you are wearing are lovely. Women always have these “problems” with image and confidence, due to the marketing, an image that the fashion industry sells like ideal and it’s impossible to meet. I loved your article, well done, Lorna! Hope you have a beautiful weekend!

Does anybody do this? I imagine it’s tricky to find the perfect pair of jeans, and once they’re found, you head back to the store and buy every last one in your size.

Ha ha! Well luckily a lot of brands produce different washes in the same cut, so once you have found a perfect cut of jeans, you can buy multiple washes too!

These are such good tips! I think we all have those days where we feel less than confident – and the fun thing with fashion is we can change what we were to play up or play down particular areas depending on how we feel about them that morning!

I’m all about embracing and loving the bodies we have but sometimes that’s hard to do, so having a go-to outfit you can throw on to remind yourself how great you are is always a good idea! 🙂

Hope you are having an awesome weekend!

I love these tips, Lorna. In the end, it begins with knowing what your assets are and exploiting them when you choose items to style!

Dear Lorna, everything what you share here is so true and I believe also in the effect of power suits! But I know for sure you don’t have to hide anything – even on the beach!
