A Letter To The World

When I was watching Eurovision a little while ago, it really hit me how everyone can actually get on. 26 or more countries can come together in one place and have fun, enjoy music, get on with each other and enjoy each others company. The same thing happens at festivals. There’s no hate. Acceptance, love and happiness is all that’s needed. We are all one of the same and I honestly can never understand why there has to be so much hate and badness in the world. This is my letter to the world, or whoever wishes to read it, and I hope that even if it touches just one person in a positive way, I’ve done what I intended.

Terrible things happen every second of every day and the fact that the statement ‘That’s Life’ is accepted and used as a reason is just not ok.

Why do we want to hurt each other? Why are we jealous of one another instead of happy and proud of one another? Why do we want to take what is not ours and cause hurt to other people? And especially as an extremely important point for me, why do we insist on destroying nature? I say ‘we’ as a collective in general as our species can be absolutely awful, but I in no way associate myself with such behaviour and more often than not, I am ashamed to be a part of the human race itself.

Sometimes, if I am honest, I look around and feel completely disconnected to the earth in general, like I don’t belong here because I don’t have a part of my brain that computes this kind of behaviour. It feels like I am from a world that lives in peace and accepts everyone as they are. I personally connect with people on a more deeper level and understanding, not just face value, as I feel their emotions and feel what’s inside them. I seem to be quite in tune with anything living, which is why I can be vulnerable to pain and suffering of others, even nature. We are all connected as one and we only have to open our eyes more to realise and see that. We are no different to each other, no matter our beliefs, our race, our species, we’re all very much equal. It’s such a shame that not everyone is able to see that and only a few of us are.

I can’t stand politics as it makes me angry that we have to live by one persons rules, especially when they’re so out of touch with ‘real living’. I feel like it would be much better if the public and community got to actually vote on each point, but the more I think about politics in general and the way the world is going, I just get angry because it’s full of lies. There’s no room for anger in life as it causes too many problems. So that leaves us going around in circles just hoping and wishing for better change.

I don’t know about you, but with all the hate and the pain that’s going on here on earth right now, it makes me want to stand strong and do good. Maybe it’s time for all of us who have good in our hearts and a want for a better place to band together and become even stronger. I’m not exactly sure how, as there are 7 billion people in this world, but everyday it gets worse and nothing changes. Sure there have been times in life where big changes have happened: like women getting equal rights, sexual orientation being more widely accepted, and I want to say racism diminishing, but I’m not completely sure I can, but there’s still such a long way to go.

Crime rises, people are murdered, people are robbed, animals are hurt, nature is destroyed and it’s just not ok. What are we doing? And for what good reason are we doing it for? It’s self destruction for no purpose.

Those of us who are good, open and try to be nice get taken advantage of and stepped on by those who aren’t. We welcome people – they destroy our trust. I’m sure I am not alone in saying that I have a deep mistrust of people in today’s world and when someone is nice to me now, I wonder what they are after or what they’re trying to get from me behind my back. I’ve been screwed over and stepped on more times than I care to remember and each time it chips away at me. Everything is always centered around selfishness and humanity is forgotten. I do seriously fear for the world as I get older. Things have changed dramatically since I was younger and I am only 28. If they can change for the worse in such a short space of time, there’s no saying what another decade or more will bring.

If our main purpose as a species is to preserve the world, to make it a nice place for generations to come, to make it a happy and fulfilling place to live and live as one with nature, then what on earth (quite literally) are we doing?! We are destroying it for our own personal greed and since we come and go from this earth in our lifetime, with each generation that passes through, it leaves more destruction in its wake. We need love and acceptance and it seems to be vanishing by the day. It really leaves me questioning – do I belong here on Earth? Sometimes I think I do, but mostly I think I don’t.

To quote Will.i.am and The Black Eyed Peas perfectly, Where Is The Love? And from my own thoughts, where is the compassion? It’s a very dangerous journey we are taking. We have the intelligence and the knowledge to know we can all be better people and live as one in harmony, but we don’t. And with that, I will leave you with the song that The Black Eyed Peas tried to help the world with back in 2003. Sorry that it’s quite a deep post today, but I needed to put my thoughts into text as it often eats away at me. Lorna xx.

Edit – I wrote this post last week and scheduled it to go live today, but I’m making an update here after the horrendous incident that happened last night in Manchester at the Ariana Grande concert. This blog post couldn’t be more fitting for me right now in expressing how I feel and my thoughts are really with everyone that’s been affected, lost their lives or hurt. I can never understand why such hate and violence happens and at a teenagers/children’s concert is just despicable. I truly hope there will be an end to this senseless violence at some point. I’m so sorry for everyone that’s suffering right now, but I am so proud of everyone for coming together. Everyone who gave blood, the taxi drivers who stayed up all night giving free rides to everyone, the selfless people who opened their doors to anyone in distress. It warms my heart to know that we can work together and be so supportive of each other. Stay strong xx.

The world is in utter chaos because it’s filled with hurting people and hurting people hurt people because that’s all they know. I think the beginning of change starts with us, as cliche as that may sound, and the way we treat one another. If we all strived to treat one another truly the way we wished to be treated, with respect and dignity, much for the world problems wouldn’t even exist. But to be honest, with the increase in social media and instant access to everything, selfishness is being groomed by the minute. If we can learn to not let the love of things and self worship get to our heads, I think we can make some huge improvements. Great post and topic to discuss, especially today as the world is morning the incident that took place in Manchester yesterday, my heart is grieving.

I just only hope that things can change for the better and we as humans can understand how to live as equals. Hatred and the fact that certain people can’t accept the differences of others thoughts and beliefs causes so much trouble.

This post really resonates with me. I cannot understand how mindless, cowardly people can justify their actions to cause harm to innocent people, let alone children who just wanted to enjoy themselves at a concert. It makes me sad that the world we live in has come to this. Great post Lorna, this really hits home.

There’s definitely something, what anyone wishes to refer to it as, but it’s evil for certain and it’s not having an open mind that brings all this trouble upon the earth.

        I totally agree Lorna. ☹️

Your post makes me think about my son – the most sweet-natured person I’ve ever met. How is he going to fit into a world like this? In the end I’m afraid people are just people – and it’s not always pretty, nor can it be.

People may not agree with what I say here, but I hope I can make folks think. It’s become commonplace to talk about “hatred” – and yet the word really doesn’t have a precise meaning. People resent others, want to blame others, choose to be cruel to others, choose to compete with them for love, money, status or land. I’m afraid in ISIS we have the closest thing to violent, dehumanising barbarism I’ve seen in my life.

I voted “Leave” in last year’s referendum – because I thought we should be governed as we have been for centuries (by a system that works) rather than an experimental type of government by people who are appointed, not elected

That’s an ongoing argument – but the reason I mention it is that it suited many people to accuse me of “hatred”. I suppose they thought I disliked foreigners, but these were people who knew nothing of my reasons, and never bothered to ask. It just suited them to accuse me of “hatred”. I think the same is true in America – people find it politically advantageous to accuse others of hatred rather than argue a case.

Sorry about the essay, which may seem totally out of place here. I hope it’s interesting

That to me is exactly why having children now is such a scary prospect. It’s a very scary world to bring them up in, especially if things have changed this much in such a short space of time. I feel for you.

Your comments and thoughts are always welcome here, nobody here condemns anyone for their thoughts and feelings towards issues, we are all accepting and understanding so voicing your thoughts is no problem. There really is too much hatred in the world and it’s completely unnecessary, if everyone turned that hate to love and acceptance, the world would be completely different and such an enjoyable place to live. The way it’s meant to be.

This is such a wonderful and very needed post. No one can pretend that the world is not in a mess right now. I always feel that i might not be able to change someone, but i can smile and treat them with kindness. Sadly, this is becoming the norm, but i will never accept this madness. Dear Lorna you brought tears to my eyes again today, after they’ve already flowed so freely. I agree with every single word you said. I’ve been on this planet many more years than you, and the decline into hatred, mistrust, and evil has been so precipitous in the past decade or so, most markedly since 9/11. It’s as if they won, and it breaks my heart. I have such a terrible feeling that there is no hope for the future, and I’m so happy that I don’t have children to inflict this terrible world on 💔💔💔💔

I know, Sandra 🙁 It’s truly terrible how it is now. I just don’t understand it, and I can’t figure out where all the hate and evil comes from and why. It makes no sense to me at all. We’re all the same. I think if something doesn’t drastically change right now, it will just get worse until it’s every week and it’s pretty much a full on war again 🙁

  10. May 24, 2017 / 11:26 am

I talked about this with a stranger on the phone yesterday and we didn’t understand either were it comes from. Is it really all out the name of religion? Please world, change! I am so glad we didn’t vote ultra right in the Netherlands. Thank god for that.

I believe it is because the world has so many different religions and some of them are not accepting of others and the way others wish to live their lives. But then I often wonder to myself, if your religion causes you so much hate and evil towards innocent people, surely it’s been misinterpreted because it’s only a smaller percentage of people who do this. It’s not all of them of course. It’s just madness to me. Utter madness.

A prayer for the people of Manchester, the victims and their families

But the world is crazy. People kill, because you do not have the same religion, or you do not practice it in the same way, because you are not of the same party, your skin color, or you are a woman.
It makes me angry, because the world is becoming more intolerant and criminal.
And I am not talking about the abuse of animals.
    Violence is everywhere:
Yesterday, in France, a schoolgirl, to set fire to another a schoolgirl!
In certain suburban areas of Paris, as a woman, I can not enter a few cafes
    It shocks, but quickly forgotten
we live in a world where one begins to be bored
    We live in selfishness
    We French have bad habits:
    – we forget quickly
    – this only happens to the others
Excuse me, to be so long
But I see life in negative
I do not know if this will continue or be worse

Hi Sabrina, your comment is definitely most welcome, don’t apoligise for it being long. It’s very valid and it’s important for everyone to get their points across how they need to.

That’s awful what happened to that school girl. I’ve seen violence and bullying like this so much, it’s just horrible. From such a young age though, I have no idea how it happens. I didn’t know there were areas of Paris that women could not enter either, I had no idea! I knew that used to be true many decades ago and in certain other countries, but I didn’t know it still happened in France right now, how awful. We are all equal!

It is definitely hard to see the positives in life and only see how much negativity there is, but I think the positives are the really small things in life that we don’t often come across. One great example would be the homeless man in Manchester who was by the arena when it happened. He helped as many people as he could, he was brave and courageous and because of that, he’s now been given a home, a job, food, clothes, everything to help him as people are so grateful for the lives he helped save. Those things like that, those are the positives, but unfortunately on the news only the negatives are reported and we rarely ever share happy news, so all the good deeds are brushed under the carpet, which is so wrong. There needs to be a news channel for happy stories!

  18. May 25, 2017 / 9:21 pm

I agree with a the majority of what you’ve written here, Lorna, except for that I maybe remain more optimistic in my own conclusions as these huge clouds do have a few silver linings. I’m very encouraged by how many of the barriers and divisions that exist in “real life” seem less powerful online… online people will chat happily and enjoy the company of all kinds of people all around the world… though I’m far from sure how such positive attitudes can be transplanted into the “real” world. Good things are going on beneath the surface though. 🙂

Sadly it is true that the world has changed so much for the worse even in your life time and maybe doubly so in mine. The amount of hatred out there is bewildering. I don’t imagine things can be turned around in our life times but I do still think there’s hope if enough people all make a little bit of effort each.

Speaking as someone who was frequently (daily…) bullied at school I also know what it feels like to be suspicious and mistrustful of people and their motives. If something nice happens I can certainly be prone to wonder what the catch is… 🙁 Thankfully as I get older I’m more open to trusting people unless they give me a solid reason not to and but old habits are hard to break.

I’ve actually always found politics to be fascinating… Not because I think the politicians are wonderful or anything silly like that… but more in a nerdy way… I have the kind of mind that quite likes facts and figures of election contests. So on election night I’ll be glued to my TV screen knowing what each side needs to do (mathematically) to win and I’ll probably be marking up all the results on my little spreadsheet that I’ve made… But I don’t fool myself that any of the political parties have the answers to anything that matters.

I’m really sorry to hear that Steven, you’re such a lovely guy, I can’t imagine anyone being mean to you at all. I couldn’t even think of anything for them to be mean about, but I know kids can be absolutely cruel sometimes. I do hope things are able to change in our life time, but I know it’s not likely, but hopefully the future might be a much brighter place. I do agree that everyone can get on when they’re online as you’re just interacting with personalities and you’re not seeing the colour of their skin, their hair, their dress sense (well unless you’re looking at a blogger like me, ha ha) so you just see the person, which is what counts. The hatred and the abuse usually comes from those who are completely narrow minded and don’t have the capability to learn to accept differences and embrace them. It’s such a shame. Hopefully it will evolve out in time, but that takes forever!

      • May 26, 2017 / 6:45 pm

Thanks Lorna. 🙂 Oh, back in my school days just the combination of being very shy, enjoying lessons and not liking sports was enough to make me a target for the bullies. As you say, kids can be so cruel. That’s all a long time ago now, thankfully. 🙂

    Dearest Lorna,

I read your post soon after you posted it, but I wanted to respond to it in a thoughtful and considered way that really does it justice, rather than adding a trite comment. What you said really resonated with me. I’ve been deeply shocked and saddened by everything that’s been going on. Sometimes it’s hard to see a solution, and the entire situation can easily lead to feelings of hopelessness. Humanitarian values and respect for all life should be a no-brainer shouldn’t they? I’m not sure why people have to complicate things, as it’s very simple in essence. I agree, racism may seem to have lessened, but it just seems to have taken on different forms. I’m also thinking constantly about the world we live in, and how I can be a more effective person and ensure I have my say when I know something is wrong.

Sometimes people expect blogs to be light-hearted in tone and avoid more serious subject matter. However, it was good to read a meaningful and thoughtful post like this Lorna.

I know, being kind and looking out for others with respect, in the animal and human kingdom really is a no brainer, but I guess people don’t see it that way which is so sad. Truly is terrible. How are we supposed to grow and evolve if basic values are disregarded, I have no idea.
